And just like that, it's almost December. You can ask anyone, and they'll tell you they don't know where the year has gone.
There is no doubt that the year has been hectic for many South Africans, having to deal with regular bouts of loadshedding to navigating record-high fuel prices - everyone is in need of a break. There's no better way to recharge your body's batteries than with a therapeutic vacation in the sights of our beautiful country.
Winter is slowly starting to say its goodbyes, with the chillier and wet weather making way for much-craved sunshine in the upcoming Spring and Summer months from now until early in 2023. Many will be planning – and probably have already – to go somewhere.
That being said, not everyone's idea of being on holiday or taking a break involves being one with nature – some just want to sleep late and binge-watch series all day.
Even though we live in South Africa, many people don't know about the hidden beauty right in our backyard, and it is free of charge to explore. The country is steeped in rich culture and history while featuring some of the most opulent natural beauty in the world.

Any Covid-19 lockdown restrictions have long since been lifted, giving everyone the freedom to enjoy the open road (without masks) again. Gumtree has put together a list of some of the best holiday destinations in South Africa:
The Garden Route (Western Cape)
There are few places more picturesque than the Western Cape Garden Route. The 200km stretch allows travelers to get a glimpse of quaint towns like George, Knysna, Oudtshoorn, and Mossel Bay – each boasting its splendour of unique attractions and heritage sites. As that saying goes, 'it's about the journey, not the destination' and rightly so because travellers can stop along the way and admire lush surroundings. When night falls, the Garden Route is not short of friendly hospitality.
The Bushveld (North West)
It is for those with an adventurous spirit. In addition to boasting the iconic The Cradle of Humankind world heritage site, travellers can also catch a glimpse of the famous Big 5, participate in a host of sporting activities and kick their feet up and unwind at the leisurely Palace of the Lost City. If there was an attraction for serving the best of both worlds, look no further than the North West Province.
The Mountains (Drakensberg)
This encompasses the beauty and ruggedness into one package for those that like to be active. The Drakensberg mountains are a world heritage site and one of the country's top hiking destinations. For those interested in tackling the rocky terrain, the hike is 68km long and can be walked in approximately four or five days. There are also one-day hikes for the less seasoned campaigner – something for everyone.
