Van de Stadt – Mercury a classic with a long history – R750,000. zar12.8 m / 42 ft– Sloop Cutter– van der Stadt: 222 design– Previous Owners: Various KZN Yacht Clubs; Natal Ocean Racing Foundation; H.E Kearney; D. De Bruin; G.LewisAmong five designs which were requested for possible sponsorship by the South African Ocean Racing Trust (SAORT) in the Cape to Rio ’71 race, was this design 222 by Ricus van der Stadt. It was taken over by a group of Natal enthusiasts, amongst them the newspaper `Natal Mercury’, who raised funds and had Mercury built by de Dood of Bremen, Germany. Thesens of Knysna executed the same design to produce her sister ship, `Albatros II’. The design was an attempt to create a yacht which could stand up well in hard weather and which could drive along without having to heave to, but would give a fair speed in very little wind.`Mercury’ followed the most modern trends in her rigging, which is usually of stranded stainless steel or galvanised iron wire. It was on the hard until he launched it in 2010.The owner has been living aboard this Vessel for 20 years.Works done on the boat:Purchased a new Vetus engine 13 HP. (+- 2007)(Seller paid +- 28,000 for the new engine, cost today 115,000.) New propellor fittedEngine hardly been used. Replaced all valves on the boat of phospher bronze with stainless steel valves. All wiring was replaced and a new control panel with volt metre amp meter, main switch etc, was fitted.Recently fitted a two speaker stereo system.Wired the mast shrouding wires in clear plastic.New floor boards were fitted. A new toilet was installed.A welded platform to support 2 new solar panels of 50 watt each was erected.Strengthened fore deck with fibre glassed beams.Altered port side of cabin, removed bunk and fitted seats, table.Windows port and starboard replaced with special toughened glass...can see out but can't see in. The boat has not been off the mooring in 12 years.In June 2023 the boat was hauled out and anti-fouled.
