HOW DOES A WATER SOFTENER WORK?

Water Softeners have been around for many years and are still the best solution available to remove Lime Scale from water.

Water Softeners use a process called Ion Exchange. This is when Hardness Ions (lime) in the water are replaced by Sodium or Potassium Ions (salt).

The resin beads are all loaded with Sodium Ions and when the water passes over the resin the Sodium trades places with the Calcium and Magnesium in the water.

The Calcium and Magnesium then stick to the resin. During the Regeneration Cycle the reverse happens and the resin releases the trapped Hardness Ions which are flushed down the drain and the Resin get recharged with the Ions from the salt so that the process can start all over again and the Resin be be reused.
