Is Netflix becoming boring? These are the best free movie streaming sites right now

Remember the days of dial-up modem connections and waiting hours for a video file to download? Thankfully, the times have changed, and most residential households in South Africa now have access to the internet by means of Wi-Fi.

Internet speeds have gotten incredibly fast over the years. The average national broadband speed in South Africa ranged from 14 to 25Mbps, but there are also much faster options like a 1 000Mbps line. Of course, the faster the speed, the more you'll end up paying your internet service provider (ISP) every month.

The best connection to have is through fibre lines (running underneath your home) for an uninterrupted connection, though there is 5G connectivity as well. Most ISPs recommend installing a larger line (50Mbps or more) if you do online gaming, stream movies, or upload significant video content regularly.

Free alternatives

The likes of Amazon Prime Video (from R79), Disney Plus (from R119), and Netflix (from R159) require users to opt into a paid monthly subscription, though only some are keen on parting ways with a portion of cash every month. Not to worry, there are quite a number of websites that feature some of the latest movies and series available in HD format, we'll get to them in a minute.

Other than a steady internet connection, the only other things you'll need is a dedicated device (smartphone, tablet, laptop or smart TV) on which to view the content and ear/headphones - depending on how you prefer to listen. Oh, and don't forget the snacks.

Most of the sites listed below will have newly-released movies already ready to stream. Another great thing is that you can choose the various servers, each with its own streaming speed and visual quality, to suit your speed. With that being said, you don't need a large line to be able to stream - 5 to 10Mbps will do just fine.

Gumtree has scoured the net and found a couple of websites that allow users to stream movies or series for free and without having to sign up:

Tubi

Crackle

Popcornflix

Vudu

Upon clicking on either of the links above, a message will come up saying that the service is not available in the region. Don't fret, in order to stream from the site, you'll need to install a VPN host (there are many safe options online) that tricks the site into thinking you are in the United States, for example.

A VPN works by encrypting your communications on whatever device you're using, including phone, laptop, or tablet. It sends your data through a secure tunnel to the VPN service provider's servers. Your data is encrypted and rerouted to whatever site you're trying to reach.

Now that you’ve got the knowledge, it’s time to shop! Head to gumtree.co.za or your Gumtree app (click for Apple & Android) and don’t forget to use your location settings to find local automotive vehicle information close to home.
