What to Consider When Accepting a Work Promotion

Career progression is something we all wish for, right? Well… that depends…

Although there are many benefits to getting bumped up in the office ranks, title changes often come with increased responsibilities. It is important to fully understand the conditions of your promotion before accepting the role.

Gumtree outlines some of the perceived pros and cons of a work promotion:

Pros

Finance: It’s always a bonus earning more money and being financially stable. Promotions usually include a bigger salary as the responsibilities are more.

Perks: Managers have a lot more responsibility and are well trusted. You may be given more flexi-time/ the option to work remotely or more travel opportunities. This can be a great challenge and a chance to grow.

Title: Having a more prestigious title on your CV works to your advantage. Having a ‘better’ title also makes you feel more confident and can often have a knock-on effect on the quality of work you produce.

Networking: Getting a seat at the manager's table can open up doors to networking opportunities with high-power decision-makers. You will likely be privy to information that can help you to grow and learn more about your industry.

Mentor: As you move up in the ranks, this often opens up opportunities for you to mentor others and make a real difference in someone’s life and work progression.

Cons

Responsibility: With a new management position, comes more responsibility and stress. It’s important to know how to manage your stress and ensure you are equipped with the tools to handle stressful decision-making tasks.

Admin: Manager task requirements are to check the work of staff who report to them. If a team member isn't pulling their weight, this can lead to you having to make difficult decisions about others' futures.

On-call: Some career fields require staff to be on call. If you aren't one for being called outside of work hours, then this could possibly not be for you.

Teams: Your new position may require you to motivate and delegate tasks to your team. Relationships and boundaries are important for this new role.

Scheduling: Planning and time management is important for managers. Some companies require managers to control work traffic, sick leave scheduling & ensuring the team is working efficiently.

Before making your move, it’s important to weigh up the different aspects and if it is worth it.
