What causes mould in your home and how can you get rid of it?

Owning a home is pretty much like a vehicle. It has to be kept in a well kept condition and if something needs attention, the said issue has to be replaced/repaired in order to avoid longer lasting (and more expensive) problems.

Mould is one such issue and accumulates in damp and poorly ventilated spaces inside the home where no sunshine can usually reach. It is distinguishable by an accumulation of black spots or stains that are usually found behind cupboards or, most commonly, on the ceiling. Did you know that prolonged exposure to high levels of indoor dampness can have adverse effects on your lungs and cause chronic asthma?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a considerable proportion of the world’s 300 million cases of childhood asthma is attributable to exposure to indoor dampness and mould.

Because mould is a granular form of water, you also need to keep an eye out for water leakages in the roof as this also turns moudly and can start to smell really bad after a while.

Gumtree, with the expertise of Roof Insulation, lists how you can prevent mould accumulating on ceilings:

  • Insulate your roof with roof insulation
  • Try and seal the windows so they do not leak cold air into the home
  • Rugs on the floors or carpeting can also help reduce the cold air in the room
  • Fit aluminium windows as this seal quite well
