Think twice before you decide to use bath bombs - here's why

One of the most relaxing things to do after a long day at work is to get into a hot bath. While simply just enjoying the soothing water is enough for some, the addition of 'feel good' ingredients, like bath bombs for example, can make bathing even more plush. Bath bombs can be purchased at a number of health shops in the country like Lush and The Body Shop.

The bombs are immediately distinct because of their often fruity fragrance and shape that can be anything from Santa Claus to a horse - but that is basically all that they have to offer. Once they are thrown into the water, they simply fizzle away, making it more of an aesthetic purchase than anything else - compared to their salt counterparts.

Bath salts are relatively invisible as the grains are so small and immediately dissolve in the water when thrown in. The natural minerals in salts are easily absorbed by the body and works better the longer you stay in the bath.

Whether you use bath bombs or not, Gumtree outlines why they aren't as big of a deal as they seem:

Little or no health benefits

Unlike bath salts, bombs have almost no body and health benefits because of all the synthetic fragrances and ingredients packed into it. Salts, on the other hand, have a number of benefits, like:

  • Draws out toxins
  • Aid in muscle and joint pain
  • Improved blood circulation

Possible skin irritation

Not everyone's skin sensitivity is the same so the mixtures within the bath bombs can trigger some sort of irritation or reaction over time. According to Kaia Naturals, a 2013 Slovenian study found that your skin can actually absorb toxic dyes, particularly through recently shaven skin. From there, the dyes are absorbed directly into your bloodstream, instead of being broken down or detoxed through the liver.

Stain the tub

Most bombs consist of various artificial colours, food dyes, citric acid and even baking soda so what this does is when you are done bathing, the colours can stain the bath and towels which can be a mission to clean afterwards. The bombs might smell and look nice but the cleaning up thereafter can become a schlep.
