These Mother's Day flicks are simply enjoyable and a must-watch

Mothers are held in such high regard in our society that a day has been set aside to honour them. It usually falls on a Sunday, and the date for 2022 is May 8.

Moms will almost certainly receive the traditional breakfast in bed or a coffee mug and bear combination. While such are meaningful expressions of affection, what (all) parents crave the most is a vacation from home tasks and simply relaxing. There is no better way to unwind than by viewing a movie in the privacy of your own home, particularly with lots of munchies nearby.

Sometimes, the best things in life are free (or very cheap) and can mean more than an expensive gift. Mom's consider the thought more than what any gift cost.

With so many options to choose from, we've done some of the hard work and scoured the net, picking out some of the most enjoyable movies to watch on Mother's Day. Here they are:

Otherwood - It is a soulful comedy about three mothers and their adult sons where the film explores their various stages after motherhood. Feeling forgotten on Mother's Day, the three best friends travel from the suburbs to New York City to reconnect with their adult sons. It is also available to stream on Netflix.

Stepmom - This one is sure to tug at the heartstrings (very hard) and leave a lump in the throat - not to mention very teary eyes. Even though it's a fairly old flick (it came out in 1998,) the premise follows famous stars like Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon where a terminally-ill woman must deal with her ex-husband's new lover, who will be their children's stepmother. It can be rented for as little as R19 on Google Play movies.

Little Miss Sunshine - A comedy-drama that follows a family determined to get their young daughter into the finals of a beauty pageant take a cross-country trip in their Volkswagen bus. Of course, the roadtrip is not as straightforward as it seems with many moments that pop up along the journey. It can be rented for as little as R35 on Google Play movies.

Lion - The Australian biographical drama follow titular character Saroo gets separated from his family at the age of five and ends up being adopted by an Australian couple. However, 25 years later, he returns to India to search for his birth parents. It can be purchased for as little as R150 on Google Play movies.

Instant Family - The movie centres around a married couple, Pete and Ellie Wagner (Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne) who decide to adopt Lizzy, a teenager. However, their life is turned upside down when they realise Lizzy has two more siblings. Cue the drama and whacky moments. The movie is available to stream on Netflix.
