How to build your own vegetable garden from scratch

The presence of gardens inject a certain life into a home with so much greenery to soak in and benefitting from the production of fruit or vegetables that grow.

For some people (like Mr Wilson in the Dennis the Menace movie), maintaining a garden is a full time job that requires daily monitoring. Others simply want to have their own patch of fresh produce instead of having to pop in at the shops all the time. Carrots, Lettuce and Tomatoes are some of the common home-grown vegetables.

There are wholesale benefits to be had from growing produce such as the influence of following a healthy lifestyle, cutting costs from the monthly shopping bill and also minimising waste.

Gumtree lists these tips if you want to build your own garden from scratch:

Location, Location, Location

Before even buying anything, one of the most important things to do is finding a location on the property where there is lots of light and not in close proximity to other plants. Plants need a healthy dose of direct sunlight for photosynthesis and not having it near other plants mean the new plant is less likely to attract pests.

Know what you're growing

Whether tomatoes or green pepper, you need to know the type of fruit or vegetable you're growing and this is because of seasonal changes where some plants produce quicker than some in certain conditions. For example, an apricot tree can take anywhere from two to five years to reach ripened maturity.

Getting soiled

The next step is to visit a reputable store to find out the best soil to plant the seedlings in. Having better quality soil can contribute to healthier produce. It is also important to know the pH level of the soil and this can be done by way of a soil test kit to determine whether your soil is acidic or alkaline.

Pest control

Bugs and pests are the number one enemy of plants and when unprotected, can totally destroy the growth. It is not advised to spray plants with chemical-based pesticide as it could damage the plant so an organic spray is next best option to keep unwanted creepy crawlers away.
