Your old Electronics just sitting there could be worth a small fortune

What might be a useless old carpet or treadmill occupying the corner of the garage can be sold for profit instead of being given away or thrown in the trash. In addition to (baby or kids) clothing, electronic devices and home appliances are some of the most popular items purchased online. This can be anything from gaming consoles, smartphones, wristwatches, or laptops.

People are constantly upgrading their electronic gadgets to get the latest and greatest they can afford to get. But what happens to all the old ones? Chances are you're one of the many with a 'junk drawer' filled with all the old ones and don't know what to do with it. With spring having officially sprung, many will be taking advantage of the frequent batches of sunshine to clear out their homes of any unwanted items that have been lying around and taking up space in the house.

Before listing an item for sale, check what similar ones are selling for and find a breakeven point. If yours is in near-mint condition (and still boxed), you can garner a higher price.

Gumtree lists some of the electronics that sell well online:

Gaming/handheld consoles - if you're no longer into gaming or it's simply taking up space, many people are desperately looking for a console. Next-generation consoles like the Xbox Series S/X and PS5 are still very pricey, and to recoup some money; the older ones often get sold. Handheld consoles are also becoming very popular and cost half the price.

Computers/Laptops - South Africans are tech-driven, and owning a personal computer or laptop has become a part of everyday life. The great thing about pre-owned ones is that you can upgrade and set them up according to your specifications. When you're ready to buy a new one, the old one can also be put up for sale to someone in the market.

Smartphones - everyone needs a smartphone, and one sold at a cut price that you may not need is a win-win for buyer and seller. Sometimes the budget doesn't allow for getting a new one right away, but there's also great value to be had on the pre-owned online classifieds, and you don't have to break the bank.

TVs - perhaps you've upgraded to a bigger and better TV set and now have no space to store the old one. TVs generally sell quickly and especially if they're in decent knack. From normal LED ones to the more high-definition 4k resolution, there is a wide selection to choose from on Gumtree's online classifieds.

Now that you’ve got the knowledge, it’s time to shop! Head to gumtree.co.za or your Gumtree app (click for Apple & Android) and don’t forget to use your location settings to find local service information close to home.
