These are the differences between the Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite gaming consoles

For those into gaming, many options are available on the market. The Sony Playstation 5 and Microsoft Xbox Series X are the most popular at the moment. They also cost a pretty penny - from R10 300 and R11 000 (depending on the place of purchase), respectively.

With Christmas right around the corner, many will be flocking to electronic stores across the country to get their hands on some sort of gaming console.

Nintendo also has a range of Switch and Switch Lite systems that are much cheaper. Using retail pricing from Nintendo South Africa, the Switch is priced at R7 000, while the Switch Lite comes in at R4 500. There are also many people selling their Switch consoles for much less than retail on Gumtree and can turn out to be money well spent, as opposed to buying brand-new.

If you're interested in buying one but don't know the differences between the two, and which one you should buy? We take a look at each unit in closer detail:

Switch

The Switch is the flagship model, along with the OLED version (that comes with a slimmer screen). It comes with a 6.2-inch screen and two (Blue and Red) Joy-Con detachable controllers on each side of the console that function together. If you attach the two Joy-Con to the Joy-Con grip, it will work like a traditional controller, and without the grip, they work as two individual, fully-functioning controllers. Players can link it up to a TV, play in handheld more or let it rest on a stand. The OLED model is slightly different in that it features a 7-inch OLED screen, two USB ports, an HDMI port for connecting to a TV, a new wired LAN port, and 64GB of internal storage.

Switch Lite

Whereas you can connect the regular Switch to a TV, the Lite is strictly handheld and does not support output to a TV. It is better suited for people on the go, those that already own a dedicated console, and who enjoy playing online or local wireless multiplayer with friends. It also comes in various colours like blue, coral, grey, turquoise, and yellow. It features a smaller 5.5-inch colour touchscreen and directional and play buttons on each screen.

These are some of the most popular games played on Nintendo Switch consoles:

  • Super Mario Kart
  • Pokemon
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Kirby
  • Sonic Mania
  • Lego
  • Minecraft
